In practice that means two queues and a decision made under time pressure. If it’s your first visit — yes, almost without exception. The Harem is the part of Topkapı where the Ottoman court actually lived: some 300 rooms of İznik tilework, the Imperial Hall, the apartments of the Queen Mother and the golden cage of the princes. The state rooms tell you what the empire wanted you to see; the Harem tells you how it worked. It is also the section where a guide earns their keep, because the rooms explain little by themselves. The Harem keeps the palace’s rhythm — open the same days, including the Tuesday closure — but as a separately admitted section its entry can stop letting visitors in before the main courtyards do. On a guided tour that is handled for you: the route reaches the Harem while it is admitting, and the walk through its corridors and courtyards takes roughly an hour of the tour. Photography is generally permitted inside without flash or tripods. Expect narrow passages and a few steps; the section is the least stroller-friendly part of the palace. One of the most impressive monuments to visit — you could easily spend four hours exploring it. Be prepared for lots of walking! It's filled with artifacts, rooms and history. I visited twice and each time discovered something new, yet there were still areas I didn't get to. Skipping the queue is definitely worth it.
